About the Kia Rio

The Kia Rio came out in 2000 and has since gone on to become the thinking man’s supermini.

Due to its practical nature and affordability, the Rio seems like the perfect alternative to a Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio or Vauxhall Corsa.

Kia gave the Rio range a facelift around 2016, which saw the introduction of a sharper and cleaner design and improved interior. This hasn’t changed it all that much, however, and Kia ensured the Rio offered plenty of passenger space and an impressive interior.

The Rio range is available with either petrol, diesel or a mild hybrid engine, allowing plenty of choice for prospective buyers.

What features does the Kia Rio have?

Inside, the Kia Rio is a very pleasant place to be, like most other models the brand makes. It offers a very functional and simple feel to the cabin, but what more could you possibly want in a budget-friendly supermini?

Entry-level models feature a standard radio unit with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and as of 2020, the mid-spec trims get an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The most popular trim is the top-spec GT-Line S which introduces 17-inch alloy wheels, LED rear fog lights, front LED fog lights and privacy glass. You also get heated front seats and steering wheel, automatic air conditioning and keyless start/stop.

At the rear, the Rio has a very big boot for its size, measuring 325 litres, and grows to 980 litres once the rear seats are folded flat.

What is the Kia Rio like to drive?

There is a good selection of engine options on offer, including reliable petrol, diesel and mild hybrids. Entry-level models get the smaller petrol engines but are mighty despite their size and can handle almost everything you throw their way.

Moving up, there's the choice of turbocharged petrol engines, which are mated to a mild-hybrid system to help improve overall fuel efficiency.

Both engines are available with manual gearboxes, with automatic gearbox options on offer for some models.

Some past Rio models featured a diesel engine too in the form of a 1.4-litre CRDi unit. This produced either 78hp or 90hp, depending on the trim level.

If you’re someone who tends to do longer motorway drives then we’d suggest looking at an older diesel model, but if you do shorter journeys or live in a town or city, then the petrol or mild hybrid ones are better suited to you.

    Used KIA Rio Review

It’s one of the world’s most popular superminis, yet the Kia Rio is still considered a slightly unusual choice here in the UK. And that’s not fair. Because this is a serious range of small 3- and 5-door hatchbacks that are attractively priced and have a very long warranty, good levels of equipment and increasingly sophisticated mechanicals. Her name is Rio, and we should all be dancing on the sand.
